Ziggy Our Scarlet Macaw
The Scarlet Macaw is one of the most vibrant parrots that are available in the pet trade. In the wild, they can live up to 40 years in the forests across Central America.
In captivity they must have plenty of room to move around and play. They should also be provided with various chew toys to work their strong jaw muscles and beaks.
Ziggy's Story
Macaws are a huge species of parrot. They are a beautiful bird that is a joy to own. These birds need a large cage and lots of out-of-cage time to exercise and play. If they're not engaged enough, they may become bored and begin self-mutilating or plucking their feathers. One way to avoid boredom is to provide them with various chew toys and rough surfaces that aid in trimming their strong beaks. You can also use the cargo net made for parrots for your macaw so it can climb on and play.
The macaw with the scarlet color is a stunning bird with large swatches in yellow, red, and blue feathers. These brightly colored birds are renowned for their loud and boisterous calls. They make throaty squawks or chirps that can last over miles to call their friends. Their powerful beaks are designed to break up nuts, seeds, and other plant matter.
The scarlet macaw is indigenous to the rainforests of Central and South America including southeast Mexico. It prefers humid evergreen forests that range from 1,000 to 3000 feet. They consume seeds, nuts and fruits as well as leaves and berries. They are a small group and can be bonded with humans if raised by a human from a young age. They may become aggressive during breeding season.
A macaw with a scarlet color that is a solo bird is a wonderful companion. However the bird may get enthralled by one person and will require individualized attention and interaction. It is recommended to teach young scarlet macaws from an early age to interact with the entire household. If a young macaw is not treated with enough care then he may get bored and resort to self-mutilation.
They may also learn to speak. They are not recommended for homes with children younger than 10 years of age as they could bite. The scarlet macaw can have a vocabulary between five and ten words. They are confident and often assertive, and they can be quite aggressive during breeding season.
Ziggy's Habitat
Ziggy and the other three macaws share an expansive indoor/outdoor habitat. Their habitat includes a large flight wing, a variety of feeders and toys, as well as climbing walls. The macaws are free to roam their habitat and interact with one another throughout the day. In the evenings, macaws are taken to their backstage areas where they are given dinner and new enrichment materials to use throughout the night.
A typical scarlet Macaw can survive up to 15 years in being in captivity, and is well-adapted to interaction with humans. Their diets are specific to their specific species and they are a fan of a variety of fruits and vegetables along with nuts and seeds. Scarlet macaws are fond of chewing. A constant supply of sturdy toys that can stand up to the powerful jaws and beaks of a parrot is vital for its health.
In the wild, the scarlet macaw is found in Central and South America. Each pair remains together throughout their lives. The female lays two or three eggs in the tree's cavity between January and March. The eggs hatch in five weeks, and the chicks leave their parents around a year later. The loud screeches of scarlet macaws permit them to communicate over long distances.
Utilizing techniques learned from the pet trade, the zoo has also helped bolster scarlet macaw populations in the wild. The zoo's conservation efforts include offering egg incubation, assisted hatching hand rearing, and the raising of parents. In addition to fostering endangered wildlife, Zoo Knoxville's animal care staff also educates the public about conservation of wildlife and the importance of animal care.
In its own way, Ziggy is an inspiration for our own environmental education efforts. He is a symbol of how each one of us can make a difference in our own way by being the change we want to be able to see in the world. We hope to reach out to more people, both adults and children, this year through our educational programs.

Ziggy's Training
The scarlet Macaw is one of the most popular species of parrots in captivity because of its striking feathers and lively character. The large macaw is found in tropical rainforests across Central and South America.
They are monogamous birds that mate for life, typically beginning their breeding cycle around a year after they reach sexual maturity. The hen typically lays two or three white eggs in a tree cavity which hatch after about five weeks. The chicks then fledge from the nest about 90 days after hatching, and leave their parents around one year later.
These birds are perfect for those with the time and resources to give them the best care. They are smart, social and can be taught a variety of tricks and behavior. Although they can be noisy at times, they are mostly playful and curious. Like all parrots they should be fed a high-quality diet that includes a formulated parrot mix, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as high-calcium greens such as kale.
The scarlet macaw is most vulnerable to habitat loss due to rainforest destruction, and also from a heavy use as pets. They are included on Appendix 1 to CITES which means that the commercial trade of these birds is prohibited.
